The business of news is changing rapidly. In a world of quickly shifting funding and advertising models, abundant misinformation, citizen reporting, and quick-fire government spending, local journalism looks different, but its role is more important than ever.
Join the Public Relations Society of America Blue Ridge Chapter and members of the Shenandoah Club for an in-depth discussion with Cardinal News Executive Directors Luanne Rife and Dwayne Yancey. During this luncheon we'll explore how they see the news industry evolving, how they are addressing the challenges they face, and why they sought out to do things differently under a high-risk nonprofit, no advertising model.
Cardinal News is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan online news site serving Southwest and Southside Virginia. Their mission is to produce in-depth reporting about their communities so that the citizens know more about themselves, and so that they are not forgotten by Virginia's political and economic leaders.
Founded in 2021, Cardinal News just celebrated its first year in business and is already making an impact with its stories. Cardinal News was recognized by LION Publishers as a finalist for its New Business of the Year award, and by the Institute for Nonprofit News as a community champion for their reporting of flooding in Hurley that led to $11 million in state aid.
